Taxi & Bus Services in Kuwait

Taxis in Kuwait are recognisable by the orange license plates and they can be hired by the day although it is advisable to sort out the fare before you travel. Taxi companies are not regulated; most do not have meters and a large number do not have seat belts. The majority operate 24 hours. Negotiate the price before you get in and don’t feel intimated if the driver then tells you the price is higher than agreed; just threaten to get out, it usually works. Fares are usually a minimum of KD1 and will increase slowly depending upon the destination. From the airport to Kuwait City (16 km) will cost KD5, and from the airport to Fintas (22 km) the cost will be KD6. A surcharge may be payable at night.

The best way to arrange a taxi is to call a company in advance. State your destination and check the price before the car is dispatched. The drivers have a fair knowledge of the city and surrounds. If possible show a map of your destination or give them a landmark such as a hotel or shopping centre to aim for.

Pick-up trucks also act as a taxi service, although they are only authorised to carry goods and passengers accompanying goods. Neither of these services are recommended, particularly for western women.

The airport operates a taxi and limousine service. For this well-maintained, clean service you will pay a premium.

In Kuwait, there are two reliable bus services in operation. Kuwait Public Transport Company (KPTC) operates large, air-conditioned buses on 32 different routes and tends to be used by expatriate workers at the lower end of the income scale. Citybus, owned by The Transport & Warehousing Group Company, runs air-conditioned, city hopper-style buses on 12 of the routes covered by KPTC. Fares on both services range from 150 fils to 250 fils. KPTC does offer a travel-card ticket for regular travels – these are available from any of the main stations. The first two rows of seats in any bus are usually reserved for female passengers.

KPTC route information can be obtained by calling into their office at the Mirqab terminal in Kuwait City. Maps of Citybus routes are available on the buses themselves.

Bus services also operate between Kuwait City and a number of Middle Eastern capitals.
